Why does Lufthansa charge to change an automatically assigned seat?

Lufthansa distinguishes an automatically allocated seat from an advance seat reservation. It says changing an automatic allocation may cost extra depending on the fare and new category. An existing reservation can qualify for a same-or-lower-category change-fee exemption, but the page separately warns that a higher displayed seat price can still require a difference payment. Do not read “no change fee” as “no possible charge.”

What this answer depends on

  • Lufthansa seat changes on the same flight; fare, category and displayed-price conditions
  • Check whether you actively reserved a category or simply received an allocation during online check-in. Those are different starting points in Lufthansa’s instructions. A seat number by itself does not tell you which transaction occurred, so review the booking history or receipt before concluding that a charge is inconsistent.
  • The page describes a fee exemption for an already reserved seat moved to the same or a lower category. Its later change terms still allow price differences regardless of category. The safest reading for a purchase decision is to inspect the final amount and ask Lufthansa to explain any difference, not promise that matching category names force a zero total.
  • Lufthansa states advance seat reservation applies to a single flight leg and confirms the selected category rather than an immutable seat number. Keep the category and segment on the receipt visible when reviewing a proposed move. A different row number does not automatically mean the purchased feature has changed; inspect the category itself.
  • Lufthansa automatically allocates a seat at online check-in when none was selected and may charge for a change depending on fare and category.
  • Lufthansa describes a same/lower-category change-fee exemption for advance reservations but separately permits higher seat-price differences regardless of category.
  • Lufthansa advance seat reservation applies to a single flight leg and the chosen category, not a guaranteed exact seat number.

Important exceptions

  • This does not calculate a fee or decide refund rights. It does not cover changing a flight, route or date. Operational assignments can differ, and a category reservation does not guarantee an exact seat number. The distinction between fee and price difference is preserved rather than silently reconciling the page into a blanket free-change promise.

What to do next

  1. Find whether the original seat was an automatic allocation or an advance reservation.

  2. Open the current trip and compare the old and proposed categories on the same flight.

  3. Read the full displayed amount, separating any change fee from a seat-price difference. Do not assume a zero charge from category alone.

  4. If the amount is unclear, ask Lufthansa to explain the applicable fare and price condition before confirming the selection. Keep the resulting category and segment confirmation.

  5. Have the fare, flight leg, original seat receipt if any, old and proposed categories and the displayed charge. A screenshot of the offer without payment details can help explain the question.

More booking questions

Does the same category always mean a free move?

Not necessarily. Lufthansa’s later terms allow a higher seat-price difference even while its earlier wording describes a change-fee exemption.

Did I buy a permanent right to a particular seat number?

Lufthansa describes the reservation as applying to a category on a flight leg, not an immutable seat number.
