Why can I check in with Austrian but not get boarding passes for my U.S. trip yet?

Austrian separates check-in from boarding-pass release for a trip that includes a U.S. airport. It says you can generally check in, choose a seat and add extras 47 hours before departure, but boarding passes for that trip are not issued until 24 hours before the first flight departs. Read the whole itinerary rather than only the flight to or from the United States.

What this answer depends on

  • Austrian online check-in; journeys including a U.S. airport; first-flight timing reference
  • Austrian’s U.S.-itinerary instruction explicitly refers to the departure of the first flight. For a connection, note which segment starts the journey before counting backward. Do not substitute the time of the transatlantic flight or the arrival time in the United States merely because that segment seems most important.
  • The airline describes seat selection and other check-in work as available earlier than the boarding pass in this branch. That explains a possible staged process; it does not mean every missing pass is caused by the same timing rule. Keep the check-in result and read any message for a separate document or airport instruction.
  • Austrian lists online check-in opening from 24 hours for Dubrovnik, Split and Zadar. Those are departure-airport exceptions to its usual earlier process. Match the first departure point and the U.S.-itinerary pass rule separately instead of assuming one number answers both questions.
  • For trips including a U.S. airport, Austrian allows check-in/seat/extras generally 47 hours ahead but releases boarding passes 24 hours before the first flight departs.
  • Austrian online check-in for departures from Dubrovnik, Split and Zadar opens 24 hours before departure.

Important exceptions

  • This does not promise issuance at an exact second or establish U.S. travel permission. It does not extend airport check-in or boarding deadlines. Another operating carrier or a differently constructed booking can require a separate process.

What to do next

  1. Read the complete trip and identify whether any segment uses a U.S. airport.

  2. Identify the first flight and use its departure as the reference for Austrian’s U.S.-trip pass-release instruction.

  3. Check whether the departure airport has a different online opening, including the named Croatian exceptions.

  4. Complete the work the tool allows, retain the result and retrieve the passes once eligible. If a separate restriction remains, follow the stated airport or document-review process.

  5. Have the full itinerary, first-flight date and local departure time, booking reference, check-in result and exact pass-release message.
