Does a green document check in Finnair online check-in mean I can leave my passport at home?

No. Finnair says you must still carry the required original travel documents after digital verification. A green check marks the document-verification step; you must continue and finish check-in. It is not a substitute for the physical documents or a guarantee of entry at the destination.

Carry-on, checked baggage, pet carrier and stroller prepared for airport travel

What this answer depends on

  • Finnair digital document verification during web/app check-in; original-document requirement remains
  • The document step and the overall check-in process have different outcomes. Finnair explains that a successful verification produces a green mark and then the traveler continues to complete check-in. Before closing the app, inspect the final result and whether a boarding pass or further airport instruction has been issued.
  • The airline expressly tells travelers to bring the original required documents, which may still be inspected during the journey. Keep them accessible rather than packing them in a place you cannot reach before a document checkpoint. This is operational preparation, not an assessment of whether a particular passport or permission is valid.
  • Finnair says travelers who cannot or do not wish to upload the documents can have them checked at the airport. Choosing that branch leaves a task to complete; it does not eliminate the document requirement. Plan around the current airport check-in instructions rather than assuming a general online success screen clears the in-person work.
  • Finnair shows a green mark after successful digital document verification and instructs travelers to continue to finish check-in.
  • Finnair requires travelers to carry original required documents after digital verification.
  • Finnair offers airport document checking when travelers cannot or do not wish to upload documents.

Important exceptions

  • This does not decide visa eligibility, passport validity, transit permission or admission. A green mark is not an immigration authority’s admission decision. The exact documents and airport procedures depend on the journey.

What to do next

  1. Use the document-upload or scan step with the actual documents requested for the traveler.

  2. After a green verification mark appears, continue through the remaining check-in steps and read the final result.

  3. Carry the required original documents even when the digital step succeeds.

  4. If you cannot or do not wish to upload, use the airport document-check alternative and allow for that unfinished task.

  5. Have the original documents, booking reference, itinerary and the final check-in result. Keep any upload-error wording available without exposing sensitive document numbers publicly.
