Can I use a screenshot of a JAL Home Print Boarding Pass instead of printing it?

JAL says the barcode on a screenshot of its Home Print Boarding Pass is not usable; that format should be printed. A supported Mobile Boarding Pass is a different credential, available through the stated smartphone or wallet methods. If the document has no two-dimensional barcode, JAL directs you to obtain a boarding pass at the check-in counter.

Carry-on, checked baggage, pet carrier and stroller prepared for airport travel

What this answer depends on

  • JAL international-ticket online check-in; Home Print versus Mobile Boarding Pass
  • The fact that a page looks like a boarding pass on a phone does not make it JAL’s mobile credential. Check whether the tool issued a Home Print document or a Mobile Boarding Pass. JAL supports mobile delivery through methods including its app and Apple or Google Wallet, but specifically rejects relying on the Home Print screenshot barcode.
  • A document without the required two-dimensional barcode is not a usable boarding pass under JAL’s stated instruction. Do not crop, redraw or substitute a barcode to make it look complete. Retain the booking details and use the counter route to obtain the appropriate pass.
  • JAL notes that some airports outside Japan do not accept Home Print or Mobile Boarding Passes. Its airport-by-airport pass-type guidance must be checked for the departure point. A technically valid mobile pass on the phone is not proof that the airport accepts that format.
  • JAL says a screenshot barcode from its Home Print Boarding Pass is unusable; the Home Print format must be printed, while supported mobile passes use app/wallet methods.
  • A JAL document without a two-dimensional barcode cannot be used for boarding and requires a counter-issued boarding pass.
  • Some airports outside Japan do not accept JAL Home Print or Mobile Boarding Passes; the airport-specific list must be checked.

Important exceptions

  • This guidance is not a ban on every screenshot used by every airline. It is JAL’s specific Home Print instruction. It does not waive document checks or airport deadlines, and a Japan domestic Touch & Go credential follows a different process.

What to do next

  1. Identify whether JAL issued a Home Print document or a supported Mobile Boarding Pass.

  2. Print the Home Print format rather than relying on its screenshot, or retrieve the supported mobile credential when available.

  3. Check that the pass contains the required barcode; if not, obtain the pass at the check-in counter.

  4. Verify the permitted pass type for the actual airport outside Japan before relying on either digital or home-printed presentation.

  5. Have the booking reference, correct flight and date, original pass file, phone or printed copy as applicable, and required travel documents.
