Why does JAL online check-in reject the reservation number from my travel agency?

Your agency’s reference may not be the JAL flight reservation number. JAL tells agency-booked travelers to use the reservation number for the JL/Japan Airlines flight. It also lists ticket-status conditions that can prevent online check-in, including a changed booking whose ticket information has not yet been updated. Correct identification comes before further troubleshooting.

What this answer depends on

  • JAL international-ticket online check-in; agency identifier and ticket-status checks
  • If the agency supplied only its own order number, ask specifically for the JAL reservation number associated with the flight. JAL’s instruction distinguishes those identifiers. A booking can be real while the identifier entered in a particular airline field is wrong. Keep the agency number for communication with the seller and the JAL number for the airline lookup.
  • JAL lists several online-check-in exclusions. Of particular relevance after an itinerary update, the reservation may show new flight information while the ticket has not yet been updated accordingly. The source does not say every failed lookup has this cause. Ask the provider to confirm the record and ticket status rather than attempting to alter flight or passenger details yourself.
  • JAL treats ordinary online check-in and its advance automatic service separately. Its automatic-check-in page excludes bookings made outside JAL. An agency booking failing the automatic service therefore does not by itself prove ordinary online check-in is impossible. Choose the service you are actually trying to use.
  • JAL instructs agency-booked travelers to use the JL/Japan Airlines flight reservation number because the agency system reference may differ.
  • JAL online check-in can be unavailable when reservation flight information has changed but corresponding ticket information has not been updated.
  • JAL Automatic Check-in excludes bookings made outside JAL, including travel-agency and other-airline bookings.

Important exceptions

  • This article does not establish that a ticket is valid, explain how to reissue it, or authorize a name, date or route change. Some package tickets and other conditions can remain ineligible. A failed lookup alone is not proof of a canceled flight.

What to do next

  1. Confirm that you are trying ordinary JAL online check-in for an eligible international ticket, not assuming automatic check-in enrollment.

  2. Obtain and enter the JL/Japan Airlines reservation number, distinguishing it from the agency’s internal reference.

  3. If the reservation is found but check-in remains blocked, ask the provider to confirm that ticket and flight information are aligned.

  4. Follow the resulting JAL airport or check-in instruction. Keep any ticket-change work with the ticket provider rather than treating this guide as a rebooking procedure.

  5. Have both the agency reference and JAL reference, e-ticket confirmation, complete itinerary and the exact error. Note whether any recent provider action changed the reservation.
