When do EVA Standard or Preferred seats become selectable without an advance-selection charge?

EVA ties advance selection to fare family, but its published rules make Standard and Preferred Economy seats selectable without that advance-selection charge during online check-in, subject to availability. Extra Legroom remains a different paid category. For advance paid selection, the published service is limited to qualifying EVA/UNI-issued and operated flights, not every partner codeshare.

Flight planning tools for comparing booking and fare details before paying

What this answer depends on

  • EVA/UNI international fare-family seat selection on qualifying tickets; no seat availability or price guarantee
  • EVA distinguishes Economy fare families: Standard includes advance Standard selection, while Up includes Standard and Preferred; lower families can face an advance charge. Waiting until check-in changes the published selection treatment, but it does not preserve the seat you saw earlier. Decide whether a particular location is important enough to pay for now.
  • EVA’s free-at-check-in description for Standard and Preferred does not make every Economy seat free. Extra Legroom follows a separate paid rule. Review the final seat category and amount instead of treating an open seat map as a blanket fee waiver.
  • EVA’s paid-seat service has ticket-issuer and operating-flight conditions. A marketing code alone does not establish those conditions. Retrieve the actual ticket and operator information before using the paid selection flow for a codeshare.
  • EVA Economy Standard includes advance Standard selection, while Economy Up includes advance Standard and Preferred selection.
  • During online check-in EVA allows remaining Standard and Preferred Economy selection without the advance-selection charge, while Extra Legroom remains paid.
  • EVA’s advance paid-seat service is scoped to qualifying EVA/UNI-issued and operated flights rather than partner codeshares generally.

Important exceptions

  • No fixed fee, remaining seat inventory or specific seat number is guaranteed. Extra Legroom eligibility is a separate airline determination. Partner-issued or partner-operated travel may require another process; the published examples are not a universal codeshare rule.

What to do next

  1. Identify the fare family, ticket issuer and operating carrier for the sector.

  2. Compare included advance choices with paid categories in the actual seat map.

  3. If waiting until online check-in, choose from the remaining Standard or Preferred options rather than expecting a previously viewed seat to be held.

  4. Verify the saved seat category and the amount, if any, before completing the process.

  5. Have the fare-family name, ticket issuer, operating flight, desired category and the current selection screen.
