Is a Finnair upgrade request confirmed, or have I only joined a waitlist?

Check the result shown by Finnair’s upgrade tool, not just whether you submitted a request. The current tool supports Business and Premium Economy upgrades online. Available upgrades can be confirmed immediately, while Finnair also publishes a waitlist route for members using Avios or upgrade benefits when an upgrade is unavailable. A waitlist request is not a confirmed higher-cabin seat.

What this answer depends on

  • Finnair published online/app travel-class upgrade and member waitlist process; no reward availability or exact-ticket guarantee
  • A confirmation and a place on a waitlist describe different outcomes. Look for the confirmed cabin in the actual booking rather than interpreting a submitted request as a completed upgrade. Finnair’s page distinguishes immediate confirmation when available from its member waitlist route.
  • Finnair’s current page offers both Business and Premium Economy in its online upgrade flow. That does not mean every flight or fare is eligible, but it makes a blanket statement that Premium Economy must always be arranged by phone inaccurate for the published process.
