How should I choose or change a Virgin Atlantic seat when the published advance-fee rule excludes US bookings?

Use My Booking for the actual reservation and check the quoted entitlement before paying. Virgin’s public seating page explicitly excludes bookings from the US from its general advance-selection fee wording, so that wording is not a reliable universal rule for an American booking. The same page allows pre-check-in seat changes within the same cabin and describes a free move between Preferred seats when the original Preferred charge was paid.

Flight planning tools for comparing booking and fare details before paying

What this answer depends on

  • Virgin Atlantic same-cabin seat selection and the public page’s US-booking exception; exact US fare entitlement is not inferred
  • The page gives a US-booking exception but does not establish every American booking’s exact price from that footnote alone. Confirm the fare and displayed selection in My Booking. Record what the airline actually offers instead of importing a non-US statement or assuming the exception means every seat is free.
  • Virgin describes same-cabin seat changes before check-in. Moving to a different cabin is an upgrade, not simply another seat selection. Preferred seats can exist toward the front of Economy or Premium; the word “Preferred” alone therefore does not identify a cabin upgrade.
  • The published rule allows a paid Preferred customer to move to another available Preferred seat in the same cabin without another Preferred charge. It is not a promise that any chosen number remains available or that moving to another category has the same financial result.
  • Virgin’s general advance-selection fee wording explicitly excludes bookings from the US.
  • Virgin allows seat changes before check-in within the same cabin; a different cabin is a separate paid upgrade.
  • A customer who paid for Preferred may move to another available Preferred seat in the same cabin without another Preferred charge.
  • Virgin describes Preferred seats toward the front of Economy or Premium.

Important exceptions

  • The exact US advance-selection entitlement is not confirmed by the regional footnote. No fixed price, preferred-seat availability or operationally guaranteed seat number is promised. Refund and disruption remedies are not addressed.

What to do next

  1. Open My Booking and identify the fare, cabin and current seat.

  2. For a US booking, use the actual entitlement and quote rather than the page’s non-US advance-fee generalization.

  3. Before check-in, select an available alternative in the same cabin or review a separate upgrade offer.

  4. If you already paid for Preferred, check the like-for-like Preferred change and retain the original transaction record.

  5. Have the booking market, fare, cabin, current seat and any Preferred-seat purchase confirmation.

More booking questions

Does the US exception prove I can choose every seat free?

No. The exception alone does not establish that entitlement. Check the actual booking’s fare conditions and available categories.
