Does an American Flight Credit deadline mean book by or start travel by?
For the ordinary Flight Credit rule, American ties validity to when travel begins, not simply when a replacement ticket is purchased. Compare the original ticket issue date with the proposed departure. Do not use Trip Credit’s different terms to decide whether a Flight Credit will remain usable.
What this answer depends on
- Voluntarily issued American Flight Credit; not Trip Credit or an involuntary-disruption exception.
- Ordinary Flight Credit requires travel to begin within one year of the original ticket issue date, subject to the stated credit terms.
- American states that Flight Credit validity cannot be extended.
- Failure to cancel the original trip before departure can invalidate its remaining Flight Credit value.
Important exceptions
- This article deliberately excludes credits issued under airline-cancellation or other special remedies. Those notices can have different conditions. A successful price search is not evidence that the credit will pay for that itinerary.
