Can I cancel an American Basic Economy ticket for AAdvantage travel credit?
A Basic Economy ticket is not automatically worthless after the initial cancellation window. American offers a conditional credit route for qualifying AAdvantage members. Check the membership, purchase and flight requirements together before canceling: meeting only the membership requirement is not enough, and any applicable fee reduces the credit.
What this answer depends on
- Direct American Basic Economy purchase in the United States; voluntary cancellation before the first flight.
- The AAdvantage number must be in the reservation before cancellation.
- The ticket must have been booked in the U.S. directly with American; eligible flights are American-marketed and American-operated and start in the 50 U.S. states.
- The qualifying cancellation must be made on aa.com or the app before the first flight departs; no credit remains if the fee exceeds the ticket price.
Important exceptions
- An agency purchase, a partner-operated flight or a late cancellation can fall outside this published exception. This is a credit option, not a promise of a card refund. A separate qualifying initial cancellation-window rule may be more favorable and should be checked first.

Will the credit equal the fare I paid?
Not necessarily. Review the applicable deduction before accepting the credit.
