Who gets the leftover American Trip Credit when I book for another traveler?
Check the recipient of the residual credit before spending a Trip Credit on someone else. American says the unused difference is issued as a new Trip Credit and emailed to the ticketed customer. Business-account treatment is different. The original payer should not assume that every leftover balance returns to the same personal wallet.
What this answer depends on
- American Trip Credit used for a cheaper new ticket; personal and business-account branches.
- When a new ticket costs less than the Trip Credit used, American issues the difference as a new Trip Credit and emails it to the ticketed customer.
- For an eligible business-account redemption, residual Trip Credit is returned to the company account.
- Trip Credit may be used for another traveler, but it cannot be combined with the value of an existing ticket.
Important exceptions
- A cheaper booking is not a cash-out mechanism. Do not assume a residual credit has the original owner’s identity or a particular new validity period unless the issued notice confirms it. Keep this case separate from canceling the new ticket later.
