When my covered flight is canceled, can I ask for earlier rerouting on a different airline?
Yes, ask the operating carrier to assess a suitable earlier alternative rather than assuming its next flight is the only option. EU rerouting must be at the earliest opportunity under comparable transport conditions when you choose that remedy. Seat availability and the actual alternatives still matter.

What this answer depends on
- Flights and passengers within Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. Check departure, destination, operating carrier and the specific conditions below; the airline name alone does not establish coverage.
- After a covered cancellation or qualifying denied boarding, Article 8 offers reimbursement, earliest-opportunity rerouting or later rerouting at the passenger’s convenience subject to availability.
- Commission guidance addresses rerouting on other carriers and other transport modes without additional cost under comparable transport conditions.
- Where the airline fails its earliest-rerouting obligation, necessary replacement transport costs can be recoverable; refusing an appropriately offered arrangement and buying independently is a different situation.
Important exceptions
- The right is not a guarantee of the passenger’s favorite airline, cabin or departure. Massive disruption can limit what is physically available. A mere departure delay is not identical to cancellation for the statutory rerouting branch. Accepting a properly explained refund is a separate choice that can end the other Article 8 options.

Can the airline always limit me to its own flights?
Do not assume so. Ask it to assess comparable earlier alternatives under the applicable obligation.

May I buy first and demand any price later?
That is risky. Seek the carrier’s arrangement or approval and preserve evidence of any failure before committing your own money.
