Can I stop traveling and request a refund after a long EU-covered departure delay?
When a covered departure delay reaches the relevant five-hour threshold, the regulation provides an abandonment-and-reimbursement branch. If you are partway through a journey that no longer serves its original purpose, the return-to-start issue also matters. This is not the same as simply requesting a different flight whenever departure is delayed.

What this answer depends on
- Flights and passengers within Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. Check departure, destination, operating carrier and the specific conditions below; the airline name alone does not establish coverage.
- At a departure delay of at least 5 hours, Article 6 refers passengers to the reimbursement and return-flight remedy in Article 8(1)(a).
- That remedy covers unused journey parts and parts already made if the trip no longer serves its original purpose, together with a return flight to the first departure point when relevant.
- The Commission notes that Article 6’s delay provision does not itself include the earliest-rerouting option in Article 8(1)(b).
Important exceptions
- A predicted delay and a delay that has actually reached the threshold need careful distinction. Choosing to travel can change the reimbursement analysis. Separate onward bookings do not automatically become part of the same Article 8 return-to-origin remedy. This page does not promise reimbursement of a canceled meeting or unused holiday services.

Does a long delay automatically give me any alternative flight I choose?
Not under the specific Article 6 abandonment branch. A cancellation or another obligation may produce a different rerouting analysis.

Can the already-flown portion matter?
Yes, where the journey no longer serves its original purpose under the stated Article 8 conditions; document that purpose rather than assuming every partly used ticket is fully refundable.
