How do I check whether EU air passenger rights cover my flight?

Begin with the departure airport and the operating airline, not your citizenship or the website where you booked. Departures from an EU airport are generally within the geographical rule regardless of airline nationality. Arrivals from outside the EU require a different carrier-based check.

Traveler organizing trip records and next steps after a flight disruption

What this answer depends on

  • Flights and passengers within Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. Check departure, destination, operating carrier and the specific conditions below; the airline name alone does not establish coverage.
  • Regulation 261 applies to covered passengers departing from an airport in an EU Member State to which the relevant Treaty provisions apply.
  • For departures from outside the EU to an EU airport, the operating carrier must be an eligible EU carrier, with the regulation’s condition concerning benefits, compensation and assistance already received in the third country.
  • Confirmed reservation and applicable check-in conditions also matter; cancellation cases have a specific check-in exception.

Important exceptions

  • A through journey between two non-EU points does not become covered solely because it connects in the EU. The UK has a separate post-Brexit framework. EEA, Swiss and special-territory arrangements require their own applicable-law check; this page does not classify every territory or carrier license. Coverage alone does not guarantee compensation.

What to do next

  1. Write down the actual departure and destination airports for the disrupted journey and identify any connecting flights. Do not use a city name that could conceal an airport in a different jurisdiction.

  2. Find the “operated by” carrier in the ticket or flight details. A marketing flight number or booking-platform brand is not necessarily the carrier that operated the flight.

  3. For an inbound flight from outside the EU, check the operator’s eligibility and record any equivalent benefits and assistance already received. Disclose those facts rather than assuming overlapping rights always allow duplicate recovery.

  4. Once coverage is established, identify the event: cancellation, long arrival delay or denied boarding. Then assess refund, rerouting, care and compensation separately.

  5. Have departure and arrival airports, operating carrier, reservation and boarding evidence, ticket structure, cancellation notice and any assistance or compensation already received abroad.

Does buying on an EU website make the flight covered?

Not by itself. Departure, operating carrier and journey structure are the important scope facts.

Must I be an EU citizen?

The geographical rule is not a citizenship test; assess the flight and passenger conditions.
