After a Canadian disruption causes a missed connection, which arrival time matters for compensation?

For APPR delay or cancellation compensation, the relevant comparison is arrival at the destination shown on the original ticket, subject to the other eligibility conditions. A modest first-flight delay can create a much longer ticketed-destination delay after a missed connection. Keep the complete ticket and the eventual arrival evidence together.

Flight planning tools for comparing booking and fare details before paying

What this answer depends on

  • Travel within the applicable APPR scope, including the ticketed journey and the event-specific conditions. The consolidated source displays current-through 2026-07-21; check for later changes.
  • The delay bands in APPR section 19 are measured at the destination indicated on the passenger’s original ticket, not simply by the departure delay of the first affected flight.
  • The APPR defines arrival as the opening of an aircraft door after landing to allow passengers to leave.
  • The alternative-travel provisions also refer to getting the passenger to the destination on the original ticket under the applicable cause and carrier-size branch.

Important exceptions

  • A self-created journey on separate tickets is not automatically one original-ticket itinerary under this rule. The precise application to complicated international connections needs the complete booking and applicable tariff. This page does not assert a universal reimbursement right for another ticket or a missed non-air travel booking.

What to do next

  1. Preserve the original itinerary showing the linked flights and destination. A new boarding pass by itself may omit the connection that created the longer delay.

  2. Record the original scheduled arrival at that destination and the actual door-opening arrival after rebooking. Keep intermediate arrival times as supporting chronology, not replacements for the relevant final comparison.

  3. Ask the carrier to assess the claim using the original ticketed destination. Explain how the first disruption caused the missed connection and identify any later independent disruption.

  4. Attach cause, notice and carrier-classification evidence. Final-arrival lateness alone does not settle the other requirements for fixed compensation.

  5. Have the original e-ticket and itinerary, all rebooking confirmations, cause and notice messages, planned final arrival, actual door-opening arrival and any later event that affected the journey.
