Why does JAL charge more than one refund fee for a round trip booked as separate awards?
JAL counts refund charges by award or ticket, not by the traveler’s description of the overall vacation. A round trip issued as separate one-way awards can therefore incur a charge for each ticket. Count actual ticket documents before estimating the total and keep passenger-specific exceptions separate from the ordinary calculation.
What this answer depends on
- Completely unused JMB awards issued as separate one-way tickets or separately ticketed connections.
- Separate one-way award tickets or separately issued connecting tickets each carry a cancellation fee.
- Multiple awards refunded together are charged per award and multiple passengers are charged per passenger.
- The refund charge does not apply to a lap infant traveling on a JAL international award without a separate seat.
Important exceptions
- The article deliberately does not quote a universal total or convert a Japanese-yen fee into a predicted card charge. Region, ticket type and the actual award documents matter. Refund eligibility, mileage expiry and cancellation timing remain separate gates.
