Why can my JAL mileage balance change unexpectedly after an award refund?
JAL reverses an eligible redemption back to its original redemption date and recalculates the account. It does not simply add a fresh block of miles with a new expiry. Other awards redeemed from the same account can affect the resulting balance and validity allocation, so reconcile the transaction history instead of relying on the headline amount on the canceled ticket.
What this answer depends on
- A JMB award that qualifies for reinstatement; review original mileage validity and other redemptions from the same account.
- An eligible refund reverses the redemption retroactively and recalculates the mileage balance.
- When several awards were redeemed, refunding some can change the resulting balance or mileage validity periods.
- Miles already expired when reinstatement is requested cannot be returned; original validity applies to reinstated miles.
Important exceptions
- This describes the program’s calculation method, not a prediction of an individual account. It does not extend mileage validity, promise a particular return or establish entitlement for a partially flown award. Account-level adjustments require the program’s ledger.
