Can a tax refund on a partly flown JAL award cause another mileage adjustment?
JAL accepts requests concerning refundable charges and taxes even when a partly used award cannot have its miles reinstated. But the request can also trigger a mileage adjustment if the flown sectors require more miles than the original award debit. Ask for both sides of that calculation before treating a tax refund as a purely cash transaction.
What this answer depends on
- A partially used JMB international award; the question concerns unused charges and taxes, not refund of already-flown travel.
- Miles cannot be reinstated for partially used awards, but requests to refund charges and taxes are accepted.
- If the mileage required for flown sectors exceeds the original award deduction, JAL may adjust the mileage difference on the account.
- Card-paid international-award taxes and charges return to the original card; payment by JAL Coupons is nonrefundable.
Important exceptions
- The source permits a request, not a guaranteed positive net result. It does not state that every unused charge is refundable or quantify the mileage adjustment for an individual itinerary. Other-program awards and airline-caused disruptions need different rules.
