Why can’t I change my ANA seat online after using Add Itinerary?

ANA warns that after itineraries are added through its Add Itinerary function, some online operations—including seat changes and cancellation of check-in—become unavailable. It also says the added itinerary cannot then be removed. Do not treat this function as a harmless way to tidy up separate reservations or as a guarantee that the connection is protected.

Carry-on, checked baggage, pet carrier and stroller prepared for airport travel

What this answer depends on

  • ANA online-check-in Add Itinerary function for eligible separately booked connecting flights
  • ANA’s process requires the relevant flights to have already been checked in. Its eligibility depends on the direction and operating-carrier combination: ANA-group to ANA-group and specified ANA-group to domestic-partner combinations can qualify, while the reverse partner-to-ANA combination is not treated the same way. Simply owning two reservations does not establish eligibility.
  • The airline lists seat changes, passenger-detail changes and cancellation of check-in among operations restricted after adding. In that situation, a gray button is not by itself proof that every alternative seat is occupied. Keep the exact confirmation and explain that Add Itinerary was used when asking about a subsequent seat request.
  • ANA explicitly says adding an itinerary does not guarantee the connection. It also says travelers without checked baggage need not use the function and can check in for the flights individually, provided the applicable connection requirements are met. This article addresses the resulting check-in controls, not baggage allowances or ticket protection.
  • ANA restricts online operations including seat changes, passenger-detail changes and check-in cancellation after Add Itinerary is completed.
  • ANA says an added itinerary cannot be canceled/removed and adding it does not guarantee the connection.
  • Add Itinerary requires prior check-in and has direction-specific ANA-group/domestic-partner eligibility; partner-to-ANA is excluded.
  • ANA says travelers without checked baggage need not add itineraries and may check in individually if applicable connection requirements are met.

Important exceptions

  • The function’s baggage-handling purpose is mentioned only to explain when it is unnecessary. No allowance, transfer guarantee, missed-connection remedy or method to bypass a restriction is supplied. Staff may need to examine the exact bookings; an available seat is not promised.

What to do next

  1. Confirm whether Add Itinerary was actually completed, rather than merely viewing multiple flights in the app.

  2. Read the resulting restrictions before attempting to cancel check-in or repeatedly select another seat.

  3. Keep both reservation references and the combined itinerary confirmation; describe the locked operation precisely when contacting ANA.

  4. For future use, assess the stated carrier-direction eligibility and consequences before adding; do not use the function solely as evidence of a guaranteed connection.

  5. Have each reservation reference, operating carrier, flight/date, check-in status and any Add Itinerary confirmation. Record which operation became unavailable and when.
