Why did fewer ANA miles return after I canceled an unused award?
The returned amount can be reduced by expired miles and, when selected, the mileage cancellation fee. ANA returns eligible miles to their original mileage groups with their original expiry, rather than giving the whole refund a new validity period. Reconcile the original miles by expiry group before reporting a missing balance.
What this answer depends on
- Voluntary cancellation of a wholly unused ANA Mileage Club international or partner award, with some miles near or past expiration.
- Miles that have expired when the refund is processed are not returned, regardless of whether the cancellation fee is paid by card or miles.
- Refunded miles return to their original mileage account groups with the original expiration dates.
- A mileage cancellation fee is deducted from earliest-expiring miles first; equal-expiry groups are used in the priority order 4, 3, 2, 1.
Important exceptions
- This is the voluntary-refund rule, not a disruption exception or a mileage-extension service. Paying the fee by card does not restore expired miles. The actual mileage ledger is private live data and must be checked in the member’s account.
