How to plan a flight with a dog

Airline cabin limits are not interchangeable, and U.S. entry requirements are a separate government check. CDC's dog-import process depends in part on the dog's recent travel history and where its rabies vaccination was given. Make one planning sheet with the dog's age, breed, measured size, weight, carrier measurements, vaccination record, and countries visited during the previous six months. Use it to request acceptance for the complete route from the actual carrier. Obtain animal-space confirmation separately from the passenger reservation and compare the full transport quote, not only the airfare. For U.S. entry, use the CDC route through the current requirements and keep the resulting documents. For other destinations, check the responsible government animal-import authority. Avoid treating an airline reservation as permission to enter a country, or an import document as confirmation that a particular aircraft can carry the dog.

Important unknowns

  • Generic planning with explicit U.S. import and service-dog examples; no airline or destination is assumed.

What to do next

  1. Use it to request acceptance for the complete route from the actual carrier.

  2. Obtain animal-space confirmation separately from the passenger reservation and compare the full transport quote, not only the airfare.

  3. Choose the transport category before comparing flights: an ordinary cabin pet, another accepted animal-transport arrangement, or a qualifying trained service dog.

  4. Review Bringing a Dog into the U.S. from CDC and verify the current page before completing this task.
