If I stop traveling after an airline disruption, which unused parts of my U.S.-covered ticket are refundable?
Ask for an accounting of the unused transportation, not an assumed refund of every flight you have already taken. A qualifying airline cancellation or significant change can create a refund for the unused ticket portions when you reject further transportation. The value assigned to a partly used ticket needs an itemized explanation.

What this answer depends on
- Air transportation to, from or within the United States covered by the cited US provision. Airport location, operating-carrier and itinerary conditions in the answer remain essential.
- The U.S. refund framework covers the unused portion of qualifying canceled or significantly changed transportation when the passenger does not accept an alternative.
- A passenger who accepts and takes alternative transportation is not entitled to an airfare refund for that accepted transportation merely because the original flight was disrupted.
- The definitions distinguish a covered itinerary from a break in the journey; the treatment of separated travel cannot be inferred from the existence of one confirmation alone.
Important exceptions
- U.S. refund rules should not be read as a universal promise to fly an abandoning passenger back to the original airport. EU and Canadian regimes contain different return-to-origin branches. A separate return ticket is not automatically part of the canceled transaction, and an unused segment is not necessarily worth an equal fraction of the total price.

Can I recover the fare for a flight I already used?
Do not assume so under this U.S. unused-transportation branch. Ask the merchant to identify the legal or contractual basis for any broader or narrower amount.

Should I cancel a separate return immediately?
First check that ticket’s disruption status and conditions. This page does not turn an unaffected separate ticket into an involuntary refund.
