When can a Canadian disruption refund also include a flight back to my original starting point?
Where the applicable APPR refund branch is engaged and you are away from the original point of origin, the trip’s remaining purpose matters. If the disruption means the travel no longer serves a purpose, the relevant provisions address a ticket refund and a confirmed return flight. It is not a universal option after every inconvenience.

What this answer depends on
- Travel within the applicable APPR scope, including the ticketed journey and the event-specific conditions. The consolidated source displays current-through 2026-07-21; check for later changes.
- Under section 17(2), where required alternative arrangements do not meet travel needs, a passenger away from the original origin whose trip no longer serves a purpose receives the specified ticket refund and free confirmed return reservation.
- The outside-control refund branch also addresses a passenger away from origin whose travel no longer serves a purpose, subject to its own qualifying conditions.
- In other qualifying refund cases, the unused portion rather than an assumed entire journey is the relevant refund subject.
Important exceptions
- A passenger who still intends to continue the original journey is making a different choice. Separate tickets and an unrelated personal destination are not automatically included. The exact cause category and unmet alternative-arrangement conditions must be established before the full-ticket return branch is applied.
More booking questions
Can I request a flight to a different city instead of the original origin?
Do not assume that is covered by this provision; ask about a separately agreed arrangement.

Does every unused segment mean a full-ticket refund?
No. The no-longer-serves-a-purpose condition and the relevant qualifying branch matter.
