How is EU downgrade reimbursement calculated when only one flight is in a lower cabin?
EU downgrade reimbursement concerns the affected flight, not automatically the price of an entire connecting ticket. Identify the lower-cabin segment and ask the airline to explain the price allocated to it. This remedy is separate from any compensation for a cancellation or long delay.

What this answer depends on
- Flights and passengers within Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. Check departure, destination, operating carrier and the specific conditions below; the airline name alone does not establish coverage.
- Article 10 provides downgrade reimbursement bands of 30%, 50% or 75%, depending on the flight’s distance and category.
- The 30% band covers flights of 1,500 km or less; the 50% category includes specified intra-EU flights over 1,500 km and other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km, with the Article 10 overseas-territory exception; remaining flights fall in the 75% category.
- The Commission explains that reimbursement concerns only the flight on which the passenger was downgraded and is payable within 7 days, not as a percentage of every flight on the booking.
Important exceptions
- A different seat in the same cabin is not automatically an Article 10 downgrade. A multi-leg ticket, bundled fare or separately purchased upgrade can complicate the relevant price. The rules here are EU rules, not the U.S. fare-difference method, and exact ticket valuation may need individual review.

Is the percentage applied to my whole return ticket?
Not automatically. The guidance focuses on the flight actually downgraded.

Can delay compensation also matter?
Potentially, but it has different conditions. Present the remedies as separate calculations.
