What happens to my paid cabin and extra services when a Canadian disruption forces rebooking?

Check the replacement flight’s cabin and paid services separately from its departure time. Under the APPR’s alternative-travel provisions, a required upgrade cannot attract an extra charge. A lower cabin and services you did not receive or had to pay for again have separate refund rules; they are not resolved merely by getting you to the destination.

Flight planning tools for comparing booking and fare details before paying

What this answer depends on

  • Travel within the applicable APPR scope, including the ticketed journey and the event-specific conditions. The consolidated source displays current-through 2026-07-21; check for later changes.
  • Alternative travel under sections 17 and 18 must provide comparable services to the extent possible, and a higher class supplied through those arrangements must not result in supplementary payment.
  • When alternative travel under section 17 or 18 does not provide an additional service purchased with the original ticket, or the service was paid for a second time, its cost must be refunded.
  • If the alternative travel is in a lower class, the carrier must refund the difference in the cost of the applicable portion of the ticket.

Important exceptions

  • These rules concern alternative travel supplied under the APPR provisions, not a voluntary decision to buy a better cabin. The lower-cabin rule is a price-difference rule, not the EU percentage formula. Comparable services are required to the extent possible; the text does not promise identical aircraft, seating layout or inventory.

What to do next

  1. Compare the original and replacement cabin, not just the seat number or aircraft model. Keep the original confirmation before the app overwrites it with the new itinerary.

  2. List paid extras affected by the disruption, such as a seat selection or upgrade, and identify which were actually provided. Avoid adding a baggage-loss claim to this service-refund request.

  3. If an extra is charged again, retain both receipts and explain that the second payment arose from required alternative travel. Ask for a written breakdown of any cabin-difference calculation.

  4. Submit the cabin and service items as distinct lines, with the affected flight segment. Do not assume a refund of one item settles every other disruption remedy.

  5. Have the original fare and cabin receipt, alternative itinerary, boarding passes, ancillary receipts, duplicate charges and a short description of the services not received.
