Will an airline pay for a replacement ticket I buy myself after it cancels my U.S.-covered flight?
Do not confuse a refund of the unused canceled ticket with reimbursement of a new ticket you buy elsewhere. The first can follow U.S. refund rules; the second depends on a separate legal obligation, an airline commitment or written authorization. Ask the airline to arrange the alternative before spending money you may not recover.

What this answer depends on
- Air transportation to, from or within the United States covered by the cited US provision. Airport location, operating-carrier and itinerary conditions in the answer remain essential.
- For a covered cancellation, a passenger who declines alternative transportation and compensation is entitled to the applicable unused-ticket refund.
- Airline commitments to rebook on another carrier vary; the DOT dashboard distinguishes these commitments rather than imposing one identical replacement policy on every airline.
- Airline refund eligibility does not by itself establish an obligation to reimburse the price of a separately purchased replacement ticket.
Important exceptions
- An itinerary may also fall under EU, UK or Canadian rules with different rerouting duties. This page does not replace that jurisdiction check. Weather can affect an airline’s expense commitments without removing an otherwise applicable U.S. unused-ticket refund. Choosing a premium replacement for convenience is not the same as documenting the only workable option.
More booking questions
The new flight cost much more. Does that increase my original refund?
Not automatically. The unused-ticket refund and a claim for replacement costs have different bases.

Should I accept a refund before asking for rerouting?
Make a deliberate choice. In overlapping jurisdictions, accepting a properly explained refund can affect the remaining transportation remedy.
