After a weather cancellation, can I get my fare back even when the airline refuses a hotel?
Yes, a qualifying U.S. cancellation refund does not depend on proving that the airline caused the weather. Hotel and meal assistance are a separate question. A refusal to cover overnight expenses should not be treated as an answer to a properly made unused-ticket refund request.

What this answer depends on
- Air transportation to, from or within the United States covered by the cited US provision. Airport location, operating-carrier and itinerary conditions in the answer remain essential.
- A canceled flight can create a U.S. refund right regardless of the cancellation’s cause when the passenger declines alternative transportation and compensation.
- The DOT dashboard describes carrier commitments for controllable disruptions; it does not establish an identical weather-hotel entitlement for all passengers.
- A trip can have additional rights under another applicable jurisdiction, so a U.S. airline policy alone does not settle every international itinerary.
Important exceptions
- A weather label is not proof of the precise cause of every later delay. It also does not make a self-purchased replacement ticket automatically reimbursable. Conversely, a right to an unused fare refund does not create an unlimited hotel budget. Exact weather expenses may depend on law, contract, insurance or discretionary assistance.

Can the airline refuse a fare refund solely because it was weather?
Not for an otherwise qualifying U.S. cancellation where you decline the alternatives. Ask for the fare question to be reviewed separately.

Is “controllable” a universal legal category?
No. The relevant framework matters; an airline service promise and another country’s statute can use different tests.
