How does the timing of an airline’s cancellation notice affect EU compensation?
Compare when you were actually informed with the original departure, then compare the offered replacement’s departure and arrival with the original itinerary. Advance notice and a sufficiently close replacement can remove fixed cancellation compensation. They do not erase the separate cancellation choices of refund or rerouting.

What this answer depends on
- Flights and passengers within Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. Check departure, destination, operating carrier and the specific conditions below; the airline name alone does not establish coverage.
- A passenger informed at least 2 weeks before departure is outside the standard short-notice cancellation compensation branch.
- For notice between 2 weeks and 7 days before departure, the carrier can avoid that compensation if the offered rerouting departs no more than 2 hours early and arrives less than 4 hours late.
- For notice less than 7 days before departure, the corresponding conditions are departure no more than 1 hour early and arrival less than 2 hours late.
- The carrier bears the burden of proving whether and when the passenger was informed; extraordinary circumstances are a separate possible defense.
Important exceptions
- The inequality wording matters: “less than” an arrival threshold is not the same as “no more than.” The flight must first be within EU scope, and passenger eligibility and other defenses still apply. A flight brought forward substantially has a related cancellation analysis that should not be reduced to a generic delay calculation.

Does early notice remove the refund choice?
No. The notice exceptions concern fixed compensation, not the basic cancellation remedy choice.

Can I look only at how late the replacement arrives?
No. The permitted earlier departure is also part of the notice-window test.
