Why was part of my refundable Southwest ticket returned as credit instead of cash?
A refundable fare does not turn old flight credit into new cash. Southwest distinguishes the new refundable payment from the portion originally funded with credit. Reconcile the refund against the payment breakdown, rather than comparing only the ticket’s headline fare type with the card deposit.
What this answer depends on
- Eligible voluntary cancellation of a refundable Southwest fare partly paid with earlier flight credit.
- For eligible Choice Preferred or Choice Extra cancellations, the portion paid using flight credit returns as Transferable Flight Credit rather than cash.
- Refundable cancellation treatment requires cancellation at least ten minutes before the originally scheduled departure.
- The remaining applicable refund follows the payment treatment of the fare; Basic and Choice have different nonrefundable rules.
Important exceptions
- This is not a method for converting nonrefundable credit into cash by buying and canceling a refundable fare. Business, package and award bookings can have additional rules and should not be mixed into a regular cash-ticket calculation.
