What should I compare before accepting KLM compensation as a voucher instead of cash?
Compare usable value, not just the larger number on the offer. KLM describes a higher nonrefundable travel-voucher option alongside cash compensation, and its voucher rules limit validity and permitted purchases. First establish that compensation is owed; then decide whether the particular voucher fits travel you realistically intend to book.

What this answer depends on
- KLM compensation offers and voucher conditions, after eligibility under the applicable passenger-rights regime has been established.
- KLM’s reviewed compensation page offers a nonrefundable travel voucher with a higher stated value than the alternative cash payment for its listed compensation categories. Eligibility remains subject to the applicable passenger-rights conditions.
- KLM identifies its vouchers by a 13-digit number beginning with 074 and states a validity period of 1 year. A refundable voucher can be exchanged for cash within that validity period; that is not the same product as the higher nonrefundable offer.
- The described travel-voucher uses include eligible new tickets or extras with KLM, Air France, Delta and Virgin Atlantic; the page excludes KLM Holidays and taxes on Flying Blue reward tickets.
Important exceptions
- This guide does not calculate a passenger’s compensation band, establish current fares or guarantee a booking will accept a voucher. Voucher conditions may change and the individual issue document matters. No cash-equivalent valuation is assigned to an unused voucher, and a voucher’s face value is not proof of savings.
More booking questions
Can I turn the higher nonrefundable voucher into cash later?
Do not assume that. The cash-conversion description applies to refundable vouchers.

Can I use the voucher for taxes on a Flying Blue reward ticket?
The reviewed KLM page lists those taxes among the exclusions.

Original worked example — fictional inputs
How can I compare cash and a restricted voucher against the same planned purchase?
Fictional arithmetic only—not a KLM offer or quote; all amounts are in the same fictional currency: start with 200 of your own cash and the same planned 80 purchase. If one choice is 100 cash, 200 + 100 − 80 leaves 220. If another is a restricted 150 voucher that covers that 80 purchase, you keep 200 cash and have 70 restricted balance left. The 70 is not cash; only the actual written offer determines whether it can help with a later purchase. Keep the planned purchase constant rather than adding travel to consume a balance.
What to do next
Compare each actual written option against the same purchase you already intend to make.
Limitations
- The inputs are fictional and do not describe a KLM offer or establish the value or future usability of any voucher.
