How do British Airways boarding groups work if my priority group has already been called?
BA says a traveler entitled to priority boarding can still use the priority lane after that priority group has been called. This is a boarding-order instruction, not permission to arrive after boarding has closed. Read the group on the issued pass: BA’s long-haul and short-haul charts differ, and ordinary Economy groups are organized by seat-row order.

What this answer depends on
- British Airways group boarding while the flight is still accepting passengers; no exception to gate closure
- BA says recognized Club, oneworld and specified AerClub priorities should be reflected on the boarding pass. Its chart distinguishes long-haul and short-haul products. For example, long-haul Premium Economy appears in priority Group 3, while short-haul Business appears in priority Group 1. Inspect the current pass instead of assigning yourself a number based on a different route.
- The airline’s later-arrival instruction means the lane can still be used by a qualifying traveler after the earlier group announcement. It does not mean anyone arriving late gains priority, or that the aircraft will wait. If the gate is already closing, speak to the agent rather than interpreting the lane rule as a deadline waiver.
- BA describes the nonpriority Economy groups as boarding from rear to front by seat row, with a different group range for long- and short-haul services. Early online check-in is therefore not stated as the basis of those group numbers. The pass and gate announcement are the useful operational references.
- BA allows eligible priority passengers arriving after their priority group is called to use the priority boarding lane.
- BA uses different long-haul and short-haul group charts and boards ordinary Economy rear-to-front by seat row.
- BA lists long-haul Premium Economy in priority Group 3 and short-haul Business in priority Group 1; recognized status priority is reflected on the pass.
Important exceptions
- This does not cover family or accessibility preboarding, a live gate closing decision, priority security or lounge access. A boarding group is not a seat change or upgrade. Staff must resolve exact-pass discrepancies.
