When and where can I buy a JAL Extra Legroom Seat after booking?

For eligible JAL-issued international tickets on JAL-marketed and JAL-operated flights, paid Extra Legroom selection is available through JAL’s stated reservation process before check-in is completed. JAL says these seats are not sold at the airport check-in counter or onboard. The ticket must be issued; merely holding a reservation is not enough to complete the paid selection.

Carry-on, checked baggage, pet carrier and stroller prepared for airport travel

What this answer depends on

  • JAL paid advance Extra Legroom selection for eligible international Economy tickets, not a cabin upgrade or exit-row eligibility assessment
  • JAL’s product requires its issued international ticket and eligible booking class, with both marketing and operation by JAL. Its conditions also identify free treatment for Economy booking class Y and certain membership entitlements. Do not interpret every Economy ticket or every flight carrying a JL code as the same paid-seat case.
  • JAL’s stated sales boundary is completion of check-in, and it explicitly excludes airport-counter and onboard sales. Waiting to ask at the check-in desk is therefore not the same purchase route. Use the reservation while the supported option is still available and review the exact seat shown in the map.
  • The airline identifies paid Extra Legroom seats with a star symbol on the seat map and provides a confirmation/EMD record for the purchase. A selected seat on an unticketed held reservation is not the completed transaction described. Keep the confirmed seat and purchase record matched to the flight.
  • JAL paid Extra Legroom selection requires an issued JAL international ticket and eligible JAL-marketed/JAL-operated flight.
  • JAL sells the product before check-in is completed and not at airport check-in counters or onboard.
  • JAL identifies Economy booking class Y and specified membership entitlements for free Extra Legroom selection under its conditions.
  • JAL marks paid Extra Legroom choices with a star on its seat map and issues purchase confirmation/EMD information.

Important exceptions

  • No exact fee, current seat inventory, exit-row suitability, refund entitlement or permanent seat-number guarantee is provided. Agency bookings and country-of-purchase conditions can require airline assistance. Physical eligibility and family issues are outside this article.

What to do next

  1. Confirm that the international ticket is issued and the flight is both JAL-marketed and JAL-operated.

  2. Check the booking-class or membership conditions before assuming payment is required or available.

  3. Use JAL’s supported reservation route to select an eligible marked Extra Legroom seat before check-in is completed.

  4. Retain the purchase confirmation and verify the recorded seat on the correct flight.

  5. Have the issued ticket, reservation number, booking class, operating/marketing flight details and any applicable membership information. Keep the EMD or other seat-purchase confirmation.
