Lufthansa service dogs: separate assistance approval from pet booking
For travel covered by U.S. rules, the recognized service animal is a dog trained to perform disability-related tasks. Those U.S. rules do not automatically establish the documents accepted on a Lufthansa journey wholly outside the United States. Tell Lufthansa that you are requesting an assistance-dog assessment, then provide the route, operating flights, dog's size, training information, and requested travel dates. Ask which forms and training evidence apply to that exact journey. Do not purchase a pet carrier or pay a pet fee as a substitute for resolving the dog's classification. For a U.S. segment, review the DOT forms and any applicable long-flight relief requirement. For other segments, obtain the airline's route-specific instructions. Keep destination animal-import permission separate from airline approval, and recheck the arrangement if a partner airline or a different connection is added to the booking.

Important unknowns
- Lufthansa assistance-versus-pet distinction; service-animal legal details limited to U.S.-covered travel.
