Lufthansa checked baggage: use the calculator for allowance and excess

The ticket’s baggage line is especially important when another airline is involved or the itinerary starts in the United States or Canada, where the controlling baggage rule can differ from a simple operating-airline assumption. Lufthansa’s standard checked-bag size is 158 cm total dimensions. For an Economy or Premium Economy allowance of 23 kg, a piece above 23 kg and up to 32 kg is an overweight bag, not a second standard piece. Oversize treatment applies above the standard dimensions, with an upper size of 292 cm under the excess-baggage rules. A bag over 32 kg cannot be accepted as ordinary checked baggage. An extra-piece purchase therefore does not solve every problem with a very heavy suitcase.

What to do next

  1. Run the calculator for the exact fare and journey and save the included piece count.

  2. Compare each bag’s weight and total outside dimensions with the relevant limits.

  3. Price extra pieces and any overweight or oversize category separately; repack a bag above 32 kg.

  4. Open a baggage report first when a checked bag does not arrive, then use its reference for tracing and any later expense request.

Lufthansa baggage claims: distinguish tracing, expenses and damage

Open a baggage report first when a checked bag does not arrive, then use its reference for tracing and any later expense request. Lufthansa asks for a detailed contents inventory if the suitcase is still missing after five days. Keep receipts and an explanation of necessary replacement purchases; filing a missing-bag report alone does not ask the airline to reimburse those purchases. For damaged baggage, report the problem promptly and keep the suitcase available for assessment. Lufthansa’s rapid online damage service is available during the first three days after the flight; that service window is not the same thing as every damage-notification deadline. When it is unavailable, follow the alternative reporting instructions on the baggage-irregularities page without waiting. Repair or replacement can be handled through the airline’s appointed baggage-service process, including Dolfi1920. Do not dispose of the damaged bag or assume that buying a new one will automatically be reimbursed.
