Can buying Southwest points help you earn Companion Pass?
Purchased points, transfers from another member and Chase Ultimate Rewards transfers do not count toward Companion Pass qualification. The calendar-year target is 135,000 qualifying points or 100 qualifying one-way segments. Qualifying sources include eligible Southwest flight earning, specified card points and partner base points. Card-earned points must post to both the billing statement and Rapid Rewards account in the same calendar year. After designation, an earned Pass lasts through that year and the next; yearly requalification is required.
Important unknowns
- The source does not establish the outcome of an individual request. Confirm current instructions with the airline; the effective date of these provisions is not established.
What to do next
- Identify the account
Decide which total you are trying to increase before paying for points. A balance available to spend and a Companion Pass qualification total are different planning inputs. Read the label on the account total you are using rather than assuming that more points of any kind will achieve the target.
- Use the official recovery route
For your own record, list the qualifying activity, the category it belongs to and the entry actually posted. Keep pending activity separate from confirmed account entries. If a card transaction is involved, retain the relevant statement as well as the loyalty-account record.
- Keep your request focused
When the expected progress does not appear, ask about the specific activity: “Does this entry qualify for Companion Pass, and which calendar year has it been assigned to?” Include the record reference instead of estimating qualification from a combined points balance.
- Check the result
Before planning travel around a Pass, check the status and validity actually shown for the member. This guide does not confirm that you have earned it, promise when pending points will post or recommend a card transaction. It also does not establish that an available Companion reservation will follow from reaching the target.
