Why does KLM charge to change my assigned seat on a Light ticket?

KLM describes a specific Light-fare rule: it assigns a seat at check-in, and changing that assignment can carry a fee. That differs from the free standard choice described for most other tickets at check-in. Economy Comfort is another seat product within Economy, not simply a free alternative to the assigned standard seat. Use My Trip to inspect the actual choices and prices.

What this answer depends on

  • KLM published Economy seat rules, particularly Light assignment and Economy Comfort; no partner-flight or fixed-price entitlement
  • A seat assigned during check-in means the airline has allocated a place; it does not necessarily include a free switch to your preferred standard seat. KLM makes that distinction explicit for Light. Read the fare rule before assuming a charge in the change flow is a system error.
  • KLM describes Economy Comfort with extra space and a forward Economy location. It remains an Economy product, but its features and price differ from a standard seat. Make the decision based on the offered category, not solely on whether an aisle seat appears farther forward.
  • KLM directs travelers to My Trip for current seat prices, which vary with the journey and other applicable conditions. A price from another route or an earlier screenshot is not a universal fee. Review the final selected seat and charge before saving the change.
  • KLM assigns a seat at check-in on Light tickets and charges for changing that assignment, unlike the standard check-in choice described for most other tickets.
  • KLM Economy Comfort is a forward extra-space seat product within Economy.
  • KLM directs passengers to My Trip for flight-specific seat prices rather than a universal fee.

Important exceptions

  • No fixed seat fee, seat inventory, complete status-benefit matrix or partner-operated entitlement is stated. Operational seat reassignment and any later remedy are outside this selection decision. Check the current booking rather than a generalized fare label.

What to do next

  1. Confirm whether the ticket is Light and identify the currently assigned seat.

  2. Distinguish keeping that assignment from choosing another standard seat.

  3. Compare any Economy Comfort offer as a separate seat product, not a cabin upgrade.

  4. Review and retain the actual My Trip quote and updated seat confirmation.

  5. Have the fare type, flight, assigned seat, requested category and current My Trip charge.
