Why can an Icelandair Stopover change the total even when it has no additional airfare?
Price the complete itinerary on the dates you will actually fly. Icelandair says its Stopover adds no separate airfare for the stay, but moving the onward flight to another date can change the overall fare. Accommodation is separate. Compare the whole trip rather than treating “no additional airfare” as “nothing else to pay.”
What this answer depends on
- New Icelandair transatlantic Stopover purchases; selected fare families and booking channels; no live-price claim.
- The Stopover is offered on Icelandair transatlantic trips; most fares allow up to seven nights, while Economy Flex and Saga Premium Flex allow up to 21 nights.
- The online booking engine handles up to seven nights; a longer permitted stay requires the service center.
- Hotels are not included, and different onward-flight dates can produce a different overall fare even without a separate stopover airfare charge.
- Consider a traveler who wants to leave home on the same day but reach the final destination several days later. The onward flight is now a different dated service. Comparing it with the original connection is useful for budgeting, but it is not evidence that the stop itself carries a hidden flat surcharge. Separate the flight-total difference from the additional cost of staying in Iceland; the two answer different questions.
- Ask an agency to show whether it has priced the published Stopover product and the intended fare family. A multi-city cash quote can be compared, but its existence does not prove it carries identical stopover conditions.
Important exceptions
- This is pre-purchase guidance, not a request to add a stop to an issued ticket. It does not confirm hotels, entry permission, current routes, the lowest fare or a particular flight’s availability. The published stay limits remain subject to the selected fare and channel.
