If I do not buy a Finnair seat in advance, when is a seat assigned and can I choose another?

Finnair says that when you have not reserved a seat, it assigns one as check-in opens. You may purchase an available preferred seat before completing check-in. Whether advance selection is included depends on the fare, seat category and eligible benefits; an automatic assignment is not the same as a promise of your preferred location.

What this answer depends on

  • Finnair-operated flights; fare and seat-category applicability; no inventory guarantee
  • Finnair distinguishes seat categories and fare entitlements. Its published rules include Standard and Preferred seats with Flex tickets and Standard seats with award tickets. An eligible cabin upgrade can also include Standard or Preferred selection in the upgraded cabin. Match the actual ticket rather than assuming every Economy purchase includes the same choice.
  • When an automatic seat appears, first decide whether it meets your needs. If it does, you do not need to solve an advance-selection problem that no longer matters. If it does not, inspect the available alternatives and their displayed conditions before completing check-in. The published option to purchase another seat is not a guarantee that a particular row or category remains available.
  • Finnair lists booking, Manage booking, its app and customer-service channels for seat selection. A flight booked through another airline needs an additional channel check: its published Qatar Airways exception directs seat reservations back to Qatar. Confirm the operating airline and booking airline before assuming Finnair’s normal tool is the right route.
  • Finnair automatically assigns a seat when check-in opens if none was reserved and offers paid selection before completing check-in.
  • Finnair lists Standard and Preferred selection for Flex tickets, Standard for award tickets, and Standard or Preferred with eligible cabin upgrades.
  • Finnair offers several seat-management channels and directs passengers who booked a Finnair-operated flight through Qatar Airways to Qatar for seat reservations.

Important exceptions

  • This does not promise a particular seat, a free change in every fare, or retention of a seat after an operational change. Exact benefits and availability must be checked on the ticket. A Qatar-booked exception is not a rule for every agency booking.

What to do next

  1. Confirm that the segment is Finnair-operated and read the actual fare and any attached seat benefit.

  2. Compare the included seat category with the location or feature you want; do not confuse a category entitlement with a specific available seat.

  3. When check-in opens, review the automatic assignment if you made no reservation. Inspect any available paid alternative before completing check-in.

  4. Use the supported seat-management channel for the booking and keep the resulting confirmation. For a Qatar-booked Finnair flight, follow the named Qatar exception.

  5. Have the Finnair flight details, booking reference, fare name, loyalty details if relevant and the desired seat feature. Keep any paid-seat receipt available.
