Will joining Emirates My Family make my existing miles available for a shared flight award?
Do not budget for a new award by assuming all existing personal miles move into My Family when you join. Emirates says existing individual balances remain as they were; the contribution setting directs future eligible earnings. Base the proposed flight purchase on the balance actually available in the account you will spend.
What this answer depends on
- Adult travelers using an Emirates My Family balance for a new flight purchase; eligible Skywards earnings and redemption products.
- My Family offers all-or-none contributions of future eligible Skywards Miles; miles not contributed remain in the individual account.
- Existing Skywards and Tier Miles balances remain unchanged when joining. Miles earned from financial conversion partners cannot be pooled under the published FAQ.
- Pooled miles may pay for Classic Reward flights and flights where Cash+Miles is offered, with the applicable product exclusions.
- Two adults may each have a large personal balance and still find that their newly opened shared account cannot fund the intended purchase. That does not necessarily mean points have disappeared; the planning error may be the assumption that old balances would migrate. Build a small funding worksheet with separate columns for personal, pooled and expected future miles. Only the confirmed spending balance belongs in the flight-payment calculation.
- Book through a channel that explicitly accepts the My Family balance for the selected product. An ordinary agency cash quote should not be compared as though the pool will automatically reduce its price.
Important exceptions
- The program’s relationship eligibility still applies. This guide covers adult travelers’ funding decisions, not children’s travel or general family services. It does not confirm whether a particular partner itinerary, conversion or redemption is available to your account today.

Does enrollment merge all old balances?
