Should I use another Pay with Miles increment to cover a small remaining balance?
Compare the extra miles with the cash balance they would actually remove. Delta uses 5,000-mile increments, normally corresponding to $50, but an all-miles payment can use the last increment for less than $50 when the remaining fare is smaller. Paying the balance with the eligible card is a separate choice.
What this answer depends on
- Pre-purchase Delta Pay with Miles, eligible Basic Delta SkyMiles American Express Card Members, delta.com, qualifying Delta/Delta Connection flight; USD illustration only.
- Pay with Miles redemptions use 5,000-mile increments; the mileage needed to cover the whole ticket is rounded up to the next such increment.
- Delta explains that the final increment can yield less than the normal $50 reduction when the total is not an exact multiple of $50.
- The cited program is for eligible Basic—not Additional—Delta SkyMiles American Express Card Members, on qualifying Delta- or Delta Connection-operated and ticketed flights booked at delta.com; any remaining balance uses the eligible card.
- For illustration only, suppose a qualifying checkout shows a $230 total. At the stated increment rate, 20,000 miles could offset $200, leaving $30, while rounding the full payment up to 25,000 miles would spend another 5,000 miles to remove that $30. This is arithmetic, not an observed fare or a promise that a particular ticket qualifies. Compare the actual checkout amounts.
- This option belongs to Delta’s specified direct-booking channel. An agency quote, a partner-operated codeshare or a different miles product is not interchangeable with the eligible checkout. Card eligibility also cannot be inferred solely from having a SkyMiles account.
- Illustration, not observed airfare: at the cited increments a qualifying USD 230 total can use 20,000 miles for USD 200 plus USD 30, or 25,000 miles after upward rounding for full payment.
Important exceptions
- No ticket, card account or live quote was accessed. The example assumes a qualifying transaction and does not describe award pricing, earning rates, post-purchase changes or refunds. Other payment combinations must be confirmed in checkout.
More booking questions
Does the final 5,000 miles always remove $50?
No. Delta identifies the smaller final reduction when an all-miles purchase requires rounding up.

Is this the same as finding an award for 25,000 miles?
No. These are payment increments applied to an eligible paid fare, not an award-seat price.

Canceling Delta Pay with Miles: what happens to the miles you used?
For an existing non-Basic Pay with Miles ticket, a refundable fare does not by itself mean the redeemed miles return. Except for tickets refunded under valid Delta Risk Free Cancellation, those miles cannot be redeposited, even on fully refundable fares.
Confirm before booking
- Confirm current instructions for your actual ticket or account with the airline. The effective date and individual outcome are not established.
What to do next
- Identify the account
- Where the fare and cancellation conditions preserve residual value, Delta describes an e-certificate applicable to future Delta purchases. That is the stated residual-value form, not a promise about every ticket or the separate cash component. This guide does not define a Risk Free time window.
- Use the official recovery route
- Start with the actual payment product on the receipt. Identify the miles redeemed, any money paid and the flights concerned. Keep those components distinct when asking Delta to assess the cancellation rather than describing the whole purchase only as “cash and miles.”
- Keep your request focused
- Request an itemized explanation before acting: which fare conditions apply, whether the Risk Free exception applies, and how each remaining component would be recorded. If an e-certificate is proposed, ask for its actual conditions and identifier so you can evaluate the instrument being offered.
- Check the result
- After processing, compare the ticket result, mileage account and value document with the explanation you received. If something is missing or different, use the relevant transaction reference and component when requesting review.
- Scope and limitations
- Do not substitute a Miles + Cash or Upgrade with Miles rule for this product. The e-certificate’s expiry, transferability and permitted uses require its own terms; this description does not turn it into a universally usable eCredit.

Delta Pay with Miles: which part of the ticket still earns?
On a qualifying non-Basic Pay with Miles ticket, flight miles and Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) use the currency-paid base fare plus carrier surcharges left after miles. Miles first offset those components, then taxes/fees.
Confirm before booking
- Confirm current instructions for your actual ticket or account with the airline. The effective date and individual outcome are not established.
What to do next
- Identify the account
- Use an eligible primary Delta SkyMiles American Express cardholder's Delta/Connection-operated and ticketed flight, marked eligible on delta.com, with the remaining ticket price paid using the eligible card. Additional cardholders do not qualify.
- Use the official recovery route
- Fictional arithmetic: base fare $200, carrier surcharges $50 and taxes/fees $50 total $300. If miles remove $100, $200 remains payable: $150 eligible base/surcharges and $50 taxes/fees. The flight-earning basis is $150, not the whole $200 payment.
- Keep your request focused
- Use the example as a worksheet structure, not a quote. Find the actual receipt's components and record the miles applied and currency paid beside them. Keep an unclear label unresolved until Delta explains how it was allocated.
- Check the result
- Ask about the flight-earning basis before converting it into an expected reward. A useful enquiry identifies the ticket, payment product and actual breakdown, then asks which amount was used for the flight's mileage and MQD calculation. Keep any separate card-purchase rewards question identifiable as a different enquiry.
- Scope and limitations
- When reviewing the account result, compare the explanation with the recorded ticket components. Save the receipt, account entry and response together. If they disagree, point to the specific amount or classification rather than treating every dollar paid as the same kind of value.
- Practical check 6
- This guide supplies no earning rate, posting deadline or account award. It does not address ticket changes or cancellation.
