Before removing a Medallion traveler from a Delta booking: check the companion upgrade
For an otherwise eligible Medallion complimentary upgrade, up to one SkyMiles-member companion in the same reservation may qualify. Delta Basic experiences are excluded regardless of elite status. If the Medallion member no longer travels on the original reservation, the companion loses complimentary premium-upgrade eligibility and is reassigned to the originally ticketed class.
Availability still matters: a seat map does not establish upgrade inventory. This is not an entitlement to every cabin, market or upgrade window.
Important unknowns
- The source does not establish the outcome of an individual request. Confirm current instructions with the airline; the effective date of these provisions is not established.
What to do next
- Identify whose travel is changing
Before requesting a cancellation or other servicing action, list the travelers who will still fly and the flights each intends to keep. Identify the Medallion traveler whose participation supported the companion arrangement. Keep the ticketed class separate from the upgrade result shown in the current record.
Tell Delta precisely which traveler is leaving the trip and what you want retained for the other traveler. Ask it to explain the companion's resulting booking and seating before approving an action. Do not assume that selecting one passenger on a screen answers every consequence for the shared reservation.
- Review the result for the continuing traveler
Compare the updated flights and class with the explanation you received. If a record differs, identify that specific discrepancy instead of treating a familiar seat number or an unchanged itinerary display as proof that the upgrade benefit survived.
Keep the original and updated confirmations together. Ask about any separate paid selection or purchase as its own item; this guide does not establish its refund or transfer treatment. An upgrade-benefit question should not silently replace a ticket-validity or payment question.
- Limits of the companion rule
The conditions here concern a Medallion complimentary-upgrade companion, not a Companion Certificate's paired-ticket cancellation rules. They do not state that the companion's flight itself is canceled or that a particular replacement seat is guaranteed.
Relevant status, cabin, market, timing and fare conditions remain ticket-specific. The practical decision is to establish the continuing traveler's outcome before removing the sponsoring traveler, rather than assuming that the original shared-reservation benefit automatically remains.
