British Airways household Avios: whose activity prevents expiry?

Being in a household account does not replace the individual activity requirement. Each member must collect, spend, share or buy at least one Avios every three years; otherwise that member’s individually collected Avios expire. Review each person’s account rather than assuming one active traveler protects the whole household.

Important unknowns

  • The source does not establish the outcome of an individual request. Confirm current instructions with the airline; the effective date of these provisions is not established.

What to do next

  1. Identify the account

Make a separate row for every member you are helping. Include the account owner, the activity you can identify, its recorded date and any question about whether it satisfies the rule. Keep an uncertain entry marked as uncertain. A household total will not tell you which person needs attention.

  2. Use the official recovery route

Use the transaction history to investigate an old balance. Distinguish a transaction you planned from one you can actually find in the record. If you cannot tell whether an entry qualifies, ask BA about that specific transaction and account before relying on it.

  3. Keep your request focused

A useful enquiry is: “Which recorded activity is being used for this member’s expiry assessment, and is anything required now to keep their balance active?” Give the account details through the official route. Do not circulate login credentials among everyone on a shared trip.

  4. Check the result

After any action, retain the transaction confirmation and check the relevant account. Set your own reminder to revisit the record; a reminder is a personal planning aid, not evidence that activity has occurred.

  5. Scope and limitations

This guide does not establish a child exemption, the precise date BA applies to an unposted transaction, or a right to recover expired Avios. Ask for clarification if the account’s assessment differs from the history you can see.
