Why might a British Airways partial refund return Avios before cash?
Compare the settlement with the original Avios part-payment value before concluding that cash is missing. British Airways applies a partial fare-and-surcharge refund to Avios first, up to that original value; the remainder and government taxes follow the original payment route. The fare must permit the refund in the first place.
What this answer depends on
- A refundable commercial British Airways ticket purchased with Avios part payment, not a Reward Flight.
- Avios used as part payment are refundable only when the fare is refundable.
- Partial fare and surcharge refunds first credit Avios up to the original part-payment value.
- Any remaining refundable amount and government taxes are returned to the original payment method.
Important exceptions
- The source does not establish a refundable amount for your exact ticket or promise simultaneous arrival of miles and money. A nonrefundable commercial fare, a Reward Flight or a holiday booking must be assessed under its own branch.
