Using Trip Credit for a new American Cash and miles purchase

Cash and miles requires an AAdvantage member with a U.S. home address, including Puerto Rico or U.S. territories, American-marketed and operated flights within the contiguous 48 states, and both payment components. Start with a cash search. At least one Trip Credit must come from a canceled Cash and miles booking. Using at least one such credit permits other eligible Trip Credits. When completing a held booking online, select the miles amount again.

Important unknowns

  • The source does not establish the outcome of an individual request. Confirm current instructions with the airline; the effective date of these provisions is not established.

What to do next

  1. Identify where the credit came from

Find the credit notice and the original booking record. Read the product label rather than assuming that every credit showing a dollar balance can be applied in the same way. Keep a Trip Credit, a Flight Credit and an unused ticket distinct when explaining what you want to use. Make a private list of the credits you intend to apply, their origins and the proposed new trip. Do not expose complete credit numbers in shared planning notes. If a credit’s origin is unclear, ask American to identify it before treating it as part of the proposed funding arrangement.

  2. Review the new transaction as a whole

Keep the intended flights and fare product visible while you review the payment options. If you return to a held booking, inspect the current allocation instead of assuming an earlier selection is still the final one. Record the cash, miles and credit amounts actually offered before deciding. After purchase, retain the new ticket confirmation and the credit-use record together. Check which instruments were applied and what remains unresolved. Seeing a reservation alone does not establish that the payment arrangement completed.

  3. Limits of the product-specific rule

The credit condition does not make every Trip Credit eligible or establish a limit on how many credits may be combined. Other product restrictions and the actual offer still need review. This guide does not promise a refund, establish a credit’s expiry, convert Flight Credit into Trip Credit or show that a particular journey is available.
