AAdvantage miles, Loyalty Points and Million Miler: use the right counter

Choose the counter that answers your question before judging a balance or planning an activity.

Important unknowns

  • The source does not establish the outcome of an individual request. Confirm current instructions with the airline; the effective date of these provisions is not established.

What to do next

  1. Identify the account

AAdvantage miles: use them for rewards such as flights, upgrades, hotels and experiences.

  2. Use the official recovery route

Loyalty Points: use them to track progress toward status and Loyalty Point Rewards. Each eligible earned mile produces one Loyalty Point. Bonus miles and miles from Buy, Gift or Transfer transactions do not earn Loyalty Points.

  3. Keep your request focused

Million Miler: eligible American-marketed or partner-marketed flight distance counts toward this program. Bonus miles and Loyalty Points do not count.

  4. Check the result

Choose the intended outcome: reward redemption, status progress or Million Miler. Put that question beside the relevant total.

  5. Scope and limitations

For a particular transaction, keep the activity description and the entry actually recorded. If a bonus appears in the mileage balance, do not infer that the other counters increased by the same amount. Compare the named entries rather than trying to reconstruct every counter from one balance.

  6. Practical check 6

For a flight-distance question, identify the actual itinerary and marketing airline, then ask whether that travel is eligible for the counter you mean. Do not assume every fare or partner transaction qualifies merely because it is associated with AAdvantage.

  7. Practical check 7

If an entry looks wrong, describe both the activity and the counter you expected it to affect. That is more useful than reporting only that “points are missing.” Keep the receipt or trip record with the enquiry.

  8. Practical check 8

This guide supplies no qualification threshold, personal earning estimate or status award. It distinguishes the measures so the next calculation or account question starts from the right one.
