Will AAdvantage miles expire? Check activity, age and the account record

Qualifying earning or redemption with American or an AAdvantage partner at least every 24 months extends mileage expiry 24 months from the latest qualifying activity. The account displays the earliest possible expiry date. Members under 21 are exempt when a valid birth date is recorded. After turning 21, qualifying activity is required within 24 months of that birthday. Primary AAdvantage credit cardmembers are exempt while their card account remains open.

Important unknowns

  • The source does not establish the outcome of an individual request. Confirm current instructions with the airline; the effective date of these provisions is not established.

What to do next

  1. Read the account before planning an activity

Start with the balance and expiry information actually shown. Note the date and the most recent activity you believe qualifies. Keep the activity description as well as its date: a purchase you intended to make and an activity recorded by the program are not the same evidence. If the account’s displayed date differs from your expectation, identify the reason for that expectation before asking for help. You might be relying on a recent transaction, an age-based exception or a primary-card relationship. Describe that specific basis rather than simply asking whether all miles last forever.

  2. Check a proposed activity before relying on it

If you are considering an earning or redemption transaction, ask whether that activity qualifies and when it would be recognized. Do not spend money or redeem miles solely on an assumption about the expiry extension. This guide neither values the transaction nor recommends applying for a card. For a young traveler, inspect the account’s birth-date entry and plan around the relevant birthday rather than assuming the exemption continues indefinitely. If a card-related exception is your basis, establish the actual account relationship and status instead of inferring it from a card held by someone else.

  3. Keep the clocks separate

Mileage expiration does not answer when a flight credit must be used, when a ticket remains valid or which status year an activity belongs to. Confirm the balance issue on its own terms. Reactivation rights, closed-account treatment and eligibility of a particular proposed activity are not established here.
