Can my proposed extra stop be booked as an Aeroplan award stopover?

Check the proposed stop against the formal reward policy before looking for award seats. A city break and an open-jaw are different itinerary shapes; not every long pause or surface trip can be treated as an eligible stopover.

What this answer depends on

  • Aeroplan flight rewards only; formal routing approval and operating-carrier acceptance remain necessary.
  • Write the journey as an ordered list of cities and mark each overnight stay and surface journey. Decide which place is your destination and which is an intermediate stop. That simple map prevents a search from silently changing the trip you meant to buy. It also makes a request for booking assistance much more precise than asking for a “free stop on the way.”
  • The formal policy allows one stopover per direction, lasting no more than 45 days, and excludes stopovers in Canada, the United States and China. An open-jaw is not permitted at the stopover point: onward travel must depart from the prior arrival city. Aeroplan offers a Multi-city/Stopover search route and Contact Centre assistance for constructing a stopover award.
  • Suppose the idea is to arrive in one city, travel overland and resume flying from another. That is a different construction from staying in the arrival city and departing from it later. Describe the gap explicitly when asking Aeroplan to price the trip instead of assuming it fits the stopover option.
  • An award booked through another loyalty program uses that program’s rules. Do not infer that a partner airline’s own award website or an ordinary travel agency can issue the same Aeroplan construction.

Important exceptions

  • The marketing page’s short geography summary omits China, while the formal policy excludes it. This guide uses the narrower formal rule. It does not establish the current points supplement, an exception for any city, or availability for a particular itinerary. Cash-fare stopover offers are outside this answer.

What to do next

  1. List the intended arrival and onward-departure cities for the stop, plus the planned duration. Compare that structure with the formal stopover policy rather than a short promotional summary.

  2. Search the itinerary using the stopover or multi-city booking option. Inspect the actual flights and operating carriers returned; do not assume an abstract routing is ticketable.

  3. Compare the total points and cash charges for the complete journey with alternatives that meet the same needs. This article supplies no live award price and no guaranteed seat supply.

  4. Before ticketing, check that the confirmation contains the intended stop and onward city. Seek Aeroplan’s review when a surface journey, mixed operators or an unexpected search result changes the structure.

  5. Ordered cities, intended destination, stop length, any surface sector, flight operators, desired cabins, available Aeroplan balance and the full points-plus-cash quote.

  6. Ask Air Canada or the seller responsible for the proposed ticket to clarify any unanswered condition identified above before you pay. Provide the itinerary and the exact wording you need explained. An independent intermediary is not the airline and cannot be assumed to have authority over its ticketing system.

Is a stop in China covered because a marketing summary only mentions North America?

The formal policy excludes China as well. Do not rely on the shorter list as permission.
