How do I choose an Air Canada Preferred Seat on a booking made elsewhere?

Use the Air Canada booking reference to retrieve the reservation, even when another seller issued the ticket. Air Canada offers Preferred Seat selection through its booking and check-in channels and describes charges by passenger and one-way flight segment. A connection with a different flight number can therefore require a separate seat selection and charge.

What this answer depends on

  • Air Canada Preferred Seats on eligible Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge and Air Canada Express flights
  • Air Canada specifically tells travelers who booked with another provider to obtain the Air Canada booking reference. An agency order number may not be the identifier its seat tool expects. Ask the seller for that airline record rather than creating a second reservation to obtain seat access.
  • Preferred Seats can offer extra legroom or bulkhead knee space, and Air Canada describes a Zone 3 boarding benefit. The product is not a promise of a different cabin. Review the particular seat’s description and each flight in the itinerary. Air Canada’s charging rule treats a changed flight number as a new segment, so an outbound connection should not be assumed covered by one seat payment.
  • Air Canada lists selection at booking, through the reservation and during supported check-in channels, including kiosks. Use the method appropriate to the current trip stage. After selection, retain the confirmation and verify the seat against the correct flight; a purchase on one leg is not evidence that the next leg was selected too.
  • Air Canada directs externally booked travelers to use the Air Canada booking reference and offers Preferred Seat selection through its supported reservation/check-in channels.
  • Air Canada Preferred Seat charges are per passenger and one-way flight segment; a change of flight number constitutes a new segment.
  • Air Canada describes Preferred Seats with additional space and Zone 3 boarding.

Important exceptions

  • No current price, exact seat availability, free status entitlement or particular row is promised. A partner-operated flight may need a different process. This guide does not cover seat-fee refunds, ticket changes or baggage benefits.

What to do next

  1. Obtain the Air Canada booking reference from the original seller if it is not already shown.

  2. Retrieve the trip through Air Canada’s supported seat-selection route and identify every eligible operating flight.

  3. Inspect the Preferred Seat attributes and the per-passenger, per-segment price displayed for each selection.

  4. Confirm the purchase or selection and check the recorded seat separately for each flight number.

  5. Have both seller and Air Canada references, traveler names as ticketed, operating carriers, all flight numbers and any seat confirmation already issued.

Is Zone 3 a cabin upgrade?

No. It is a stated boarding benefit of the Preferred Seat product, not evidence of a cabin change.
